Integral to this post was an MSc in Management (Clinical Leadership), which was run through the Brighton Business School. She was also a mentee on the NHS London 'Prepare to Lead' scheme. She has previously worked at the Homerton Hospital, the Whittington and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. Previous experience includes a PhD in Immunology, as well as a year as Editor-in-Chief of an internet journal (the Internet journal of Pediatrics and Neonatology). She teaches on the Imperial (St Mary's ) MRCPCH clinical course.

The creation and ethos of the course

Abigail conceived the idea for a paediatric ECG course during her first year as a Paediatric Registrar and contacted Juan (with whom she had worked with as an SHO) and was delighted to find that he had been intending to set up this course for some time. Juan has executive responsibility for the educational content of the course and Abigail is responsible for providing a smooth delegate experience in a setting that befits the high quality nature of the course and as such future courses are to be held at the Institute of Child Health (Great Ormond Street Hospital).

The ethos of the course is focussed on exceptional teaching, delivered by dedicated paediatric cardiology consultants and registrars. Juan was a Paediatric Cardiology Registrar when the course started and deliberately chose to have cardiology registrars teaching on the course as they are acutely aware of the clinical scenarios that necessitate ECG interpretation that can present to their colleagues in the general or neonatal setting. The registrars relate to the learning needs of their colleagues and therefore the content of the course is truly centred around the needs of the participants. The nature of the teaching is such that the delegates feel engaged in every session and comfortable to participate and question as necessary. All sessions contain numerous opportunities to practice ECG interpretation and there is a combination of lecture style and small group work. The ultimate aim is to build the participants confidence in ECG interpretation, which they can take back to their workplace setting.

The course is aimed at paediatric trainees, including those taking MRCPCH exams, cardiology nurses and general paediatric consultants who would like to brush up their skills. A&E doctors would also find the course beneficial.
